A John Marshall of Aberdeen 1895 Violin - $1500 in Abbotsford, British Columbia for sale

$1,500

My Great Aunt had in her possession and since left it to me a Violin made in 1895 by a Scottish luthier named John Marshall.
It is still in great condition and sounds wonderful I had it inspected and appraised by a local luthier.

Write up:

John Marshall, Aberdeen

This maker was born near Methlick, Aberdeenshire, on the 15th of January, 1844. He began to make violins about the year 1870, and has made about 150, besides repairing a vast number.
Most of these violins are on the Stradivari model; but occasionally the model is varied. The early ones are covered with spirit varnish; but since the discovery of amber oil varnish Marshall has always used that. The work is much above average, and as a neat and skilful repairer Marshall is justly famed. A copy of a Stradivari by him, covered with brown varnish, which I tried, had a large tone, with a specially fine third string. Two violins on a model of his own, with beautifully drawn f holes, had a sweet but rather small tone, and seemed to be rather thin in wood. Label, printed from types on pink paper, within a border: -
